Achim

Achim immediately grabbed his phone and sent a text to his alpha. They’d dealt with a lot of creatures over the years, but never a demon. Anything that gave Ozias that deeply concerned look, though, meant they needed to take action fast.

“Young Ryan mentioned a coven,” Ozias said. “Are they friend or foe?”

“Friend, for sure,” Achim said. “They’re members of Nick’s pack.”

“Take me to them. I need to understand what sort of magic humans are capable of.”

To Achim’s ears, it sounded insulting, but he quickly realized Ozias had gone into defense mode. He had no idea what it took to defeat a demon, but it sounded like magic would be their primary weapon.

Before Achim could answer, a portal opened and Solomon walked through. He glanced curiously at Connall before turning his attention to his pack. “Talk to me.”

“Ozias saw a…” Achim paused, realizing he had no idea exactly what the bird creature was or why it had caused Ozias to react that way.

“Strix,” Ozias finished for him. “They are bad omens in my realm, signaling the presence of a demon. They feed on demonic energy. If one is awake and in the human realm, there must be a demon nearby.”

“How close?” Solomon asked.

Ozias blew out a breath. Achim couldn’t resist stepping closer and adding his strength to Ozias’s. “I don’t know. In my realm, it’s not so much a physical distance but a… magical proximity. I’m afraid I can’t seem to find the human words to explain. Demons are fast as well, and if one is close, it’ll be gone by the time we get enough magic here to contain it.”

“Ozias wants to go talk to the coven,” Achim added. “He wants to see if their magic can help.”

Solomon nodded. “So the only way to take the demon out is with magic?”

“Yes. Once its magic is contained, then it can be fought with tooth and claw. Or sword,” Ozias added, gesturing to Connall. “But with its magic intact, no weapon will be able to harm it.”

“And the coven will be able to help?” Solomon asked.

“It should. The stories say human magic isn’t… much. But I’m beginning to wonder if some of the stories aren’t based entirely in fact.”

“Achim, go. Keep me updated. I’m going to check in with the Goddess and see how she wants us to proceed.”

“Alpha, I wish to gather information on this threat to take back to my queen.” Connall looked as concerned as Ozias, which was saying something since the fae were known for their ability to keep their emotions from showing. “If demons have crossed into the human realm, our own may be at risk, considering the problems we’re currently facing.”

“I’m fine with it, as long as their alpha agrees to allow your presence. If not, you’ll have to go.”

“I’ve met their alpha,” Connall explained. “I understand his need for caution and respect his wishes.”

Solomon nodded before disappearing into a portal. Achim turned to Ozias and Walt. “You ready?”

“I’m going to head back to the bar and see where Sol needs me,” Walt said.
